All Eyez on the Cloud: AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification

All Eyez on the Cloud: AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification

Overview

Have you been thinking about learning cloud computing? You’re not alone. Over 90% of companies worldwide are utilizing the cloud, and a significant number of them are using Amazon as their cloud provider. To break into the world of cloud computing, it's essential to understand the fundamentals of the cloud provider you choose. For those interested in AWS, the certification that covers this foundational knowledge is the AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification.

Why the AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification?

One of the perks of being in the IT industry is that you often get an early heads-up on emerging technologies. This early information gives you the opportunity to start learning these technologies, much like investing in a stock when it’s still under the radar. I remember hearing about cloud computing years ago, and in hindsight, I probably should have started learning about it then. But I didn’t, and now it’s being used everywhere.

If you’re unsure whether you should dive into cloud computing, now might be the perfect time to at least learn the fundamentals. For AWS, that starting point is the Cloud Practitioner Certification. In this post, I’ll discuss what you’ll gain from this certification, the domains it covers, pathways to advanced certifications, the cost, and my personal thoughts on its value.

Foundational Knowledge

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification is a foundational cloud certification from Amazon. This certification is typically the first one that most people pursue when they start learning about cloud computing. It’s important to note that obtaining this certification is not mandatory. You can jump directly to a higher certification if you prefer, though this is not recommended unless you already have some cloud experience—perhaps from working in a role that involves cloud support.

If the cloud is completely new to you, starting with the Cloud Practitioner Certification is highly advisable. This certification validates your knowledge across several key domains:

  • Domain 1: Cloud Concepts

  • Domain 2: Security and Compliance

  • Domain 3: Cloud Technology and Services

  • Domain 4: Billing, Pricing, and Support

The exam lasts 90 minutes and consists of 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions. The cost of this certification is $100.

Pathway to Advanced Certifications

The Cloud Practitioner Certification is designed as a stepping stone. Once you have this certification, you’ll have a solid foundation in cloud computing—at least when it comes to AWS. From here, you can progress to more advanced certifications, such as the Developer Associate or the Solutions Architect certifications. AWS also offers specialty certifications, such as advanced networking and security certifications. This is where I believe the full value of AWS certifications becomes apparent, as these higher-level certifications are highly sought after by employers.

My Thoughts

If you’re looking to break into cloud computing, I believe this certification is worth pursuing, especially if you have no prior experience with the cloud. However, once you obtain this certification, it’s important not to stop there. Continue your studies and aim for one of the associate or specialty certifications. As I mentioned earlier, this is where you’ll unlock the real value and see a return on your investment.

While it’s possible to land an entry-level cloud support role with just the Cloud Practitioner Certification, I recommend pursuing higher certifications and specializing in a particular area.

Preparing for the Certification

Preparing for this certification can be quite interesting. Of course, there are study guides (links in the description) that can help you prepare. However, what excites me the most is AWS Cloud Quest. I’ve created a video on this, and the best part is that it’s free. AWS Cloud Quest offers a fun way to learn about the cloud by playing a video game. I think this is a game-changer.
